How to Repair Windows Updates for XP

One of the most common problems In Windows XP is Windows Updates suddenly no longer working.  The page will either report an error, or just continue in a loop never getting to the updates. This is a repair that will fix about 90% of Windows Updates problems in Windows XP.  Including the 0x8007005 Error. Before following, PLEASE try running Windows Updates with your Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware software disabled as this may be causing your problem. Step 1:  Download and Install the MSXML3 Package from Microsoft HERE. Step 2: Copy the following into Notepad and save as WUFIX.BAT
net stop wuauserv rd /s /q C:\Windows\SOftwaredistribution REGSVR32 /s WUAPI.DLL REGSVR32 /s WUAUENG.DLL REGSVR32 /s WUAUENG1.DLL REGSVR32 /s ATL.DLL REGSVR32 /s WUCLTUI.DLL REGSVR32 /s WUPS.DLL REGSVR32 /s WUPS2.DLL REGSVR32 /s WUWEB.DLL REGSVR32 /s Softpub.dll REGSVR32 /s Wintrust.dll REGSVR32 /s oleaut32.dll REGSVR32 /s jscript.dll REGSVR32 /s vbscript.dll REGSVR32 /s msxml.dll REGSVR32 /s initpki.dll REGSVR32 /s cryptdlg.dll REGSVR32 /s qmgr.dll REGSVR32 /s qmgrprxy.dll REGSVR32 /s bitsprx2.dll REGSVR32 /s bitsprx3.dll REGSVR32 /s Initpki.dll REGSVR32 /s Mssip32.dll REGSVR32 /s dssenh.dll REGSVR32 /s rsaenh.dll REGSVR32 /s gpkcsp.dll REGSVR32 /s sccbase.dll REGSVR32 /s slbcsp.dll REGSVR32 /s cryptdlg.dll
Step 3: Run the WUFIX.BAT file you just created and restart the computer.  Windows Updates should be working again.  Good luck.

More Free Anti-Virus

I often recommend free versions of AVG and even BitDefender.  Apparently now CA wants to attract more customers and is so giving away their Anti-Virus 2009 with a 1 year subscription.  While AVG and BitDefender aren't limited to a single year, I do know some that like CA's Anti-Virus and will be happy to get their 1 year free. Free Online Virus/Spyware Scans

Pretty much any anti-virus company now has a free online virus scanner, but some are better than others, and some will remove what they find while others will not. Housecall From TrendMicro is my personal favorite. It is very good at finding and removing most viruses and spyware and can also look for missing updates, open ports, etc.
