The Clanker Powers:

Germany is a massive military machine with weapons aimed outwards to all surrounding countries. It points threateningly at Britain, not so much as a sign of direct aggression, but more as an indicator that it was now Germany’s turn to start a grand global Empire to challenge the world’s current one.

Austria Hungary is an aggressive armoured giant, teetering on shoddy foundations. It is also the primary aggressor in a land grab against Serbia, with two bayonets piercing the border.

The Ottoman empire is a teetering automaton, collapsing under the weight of a paranoid and ungainly spying network that gazes at Europe through many lenses and spy glasses.

The Swiss watch ticks away the time, comfortable to wait it all out.

The Darwinist Powers:

Britain is an militaristic lion with a Roman Imperial italic-type helmet. It sits upon a mound of riches gathered from its Empire.

France’s elephant beast (wearing the French kepi they started the war with before adapting their firefighter helmets) is influenced by the Elephantine Colossus built for the Universal Exhibition of 1889 in Paris (later it ended up going to the Moulin Rouge.)

Russia is a huge imperialist bear, rotting and filled with maggots.

Serbia’s imagery is an indicator of the huge amounts of civilian deaths and suffering they’ll find themselves subject to.

Norway and Sweden are both Scandinavian trolls in the style of John Bauer, an inspirational illustrator from the era who produced a lot of phenomenal work during the war.

Portugal is a parrot for the Entente trying to goad a slumbering Spain into the war.

Ireland looks askance to Britain and brandishes a shillelagh. An indicator of their very rough relationship at the time, and of their upcoming involvement with the Central powers.

Italy is a clutch of snakes with intents on the Central powers despite existing agreements. A foreshadowing of their arrangements at the secret 1915 Treaty of London where they were promised land in exchange for involvement. It was heavily influenced by Italian Prime Minister, Antonio Salandra’s open policy of serving Italy’s "divine self-interest."

That very pretty picture above is of every McDonald's in the United States as of the time it was created.  The finding from the data that led to this very pretty picture?  No matter where you are in the lower 48 of the United States, no matter how remote or desolate, you are within 107 miles from a McDonald's.

Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonald’s, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car!

United in Hatred

Glenn Beck's stated goal for his 9.12 project is very noble and respectable.  To return to the bi-partisan time of the day after 9/11, when Americans no matter their race, political orientation, or gender united and worked together. Unfortunately, that's nothing like what it's become. The 9.12 rally in Washington, DC was shameful, embarrassing, and overall political.  The hatred and misinformation on the signs was astounding. The racism and extremism even more-so.  Instead of uniting the country, it has further divided it between  those who support Obama, those who disagree with Obama but are able to be civil and free-thinking, and paranoia extremists who will believe anything anti-Obama no matter the evidence to the contrary.  The protesters were instead united in hatred of the government and Obama, even if they couldn't agree on the exact reasons. The hate was bad itself, but it also contained veiled implied threats of violence. One such sign said "We came unarmed (this time)." They claim to be protesting for "Americans", while ignoring the most American point, this is an elected government. The people HAVE spoken and chosen these people to be the government. Just because they were their choice does not make them any less representative of the people. A common phrase during the Bush Administration was "Love it or leave it" whenever an anti-Bush administration protest showed up. Now these same people are protesting Obama and threatening a coup because they don't like the guy the rest of the country chose? This doesn't sound very "American" to me. Also, contrary to some claims, the 50 - 60,000 people at the rallys were NOT larger than the few MILLION people at Obama's inauguration. Pictures: More Photos

6 Rules To A Faster Outlook

One of the major issues most users have with Outlook is the fact that it gets really slow and eats up a lot of memory on their systems.  Instead of dealing with Outlook crashes, crazy error messages, memory hogging or waiting several minutes for Outlook to load, follow these rules to keep Outlook fast and responsive.

One thing you want to understand about Outlook is that it’s completely run from a database. All your emails, tasks, calendar items, business contacts, etc are stored in a database file. To reduce memory usage and make Outlook fast, follow these pointers:

Rule 1. Firstly, make sure you have AutoArchive turned on in Outlook. You’re probably never going to look at those emails from 5 years ago again are you! Instead of having thousands of emails in your Inbox, AutoArchive will move the older one to a new PST file and keep your current PST file slim.

If you don’t want to do that, at least move all older emails to another folder so that Outlook does not have to load thousands of emails every time it comes to the Inbox, thus causing higher memory usage.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
  2. Click AutoArchive.
  3. Select the Run AutoArchive every n days check box.
  4. Type or choose a number in the box for how often you want AutoArchive to run.

Rule 2. Make sure you are only using essential add-ons for Outlook. A lot of programs love to install add-ons to Outlook automatically, such as Adobe, Xobni and screen capture software. Even my notes application, Evernote, installed it’s own add-on to Outlook.

If you don’t use them, get rid of them! They have to be loaded into memory when Outlook is started and they make the program slower also.

1. In Outlook 2007, go to Tools > Trust Center

2. Click on the Add-ins section

3. You will now see all active, non-active, and disabled add-ins. Click on the add-in you want to enable/disable and then click on the Go button towards the bottom.

4. This will then open up the COM add-ins page. You can then check/uncheck the add-ins you want to enabe or disable.

Rule 3. Outlook comes bundled with the Speech and Handwriting Recognition features that are a part of Windows. If you don’t use this, disable it as it’ll not load every time Outlook starts.

You can go to Control Panel, Date Time Language and Regional Options, click on Languages tab, then Details, and under Installed Services, remove Speech Recognition. On the Advanced tab, click Turn off advanced text services.

Rule 4. If you are running Outlook 2003, you should minimize Outlook every once in a while. Why? Apparently, if you just leave the main window up all the time, it constantly takes up more memory.

The memory is only released when the program is minimized.  So minimizing the program will help reduce the amount of memory Outlook uses.

Rule 5. For some reason, people forget about their spam and trash folders. Empty them out! Many people get hundreds of spam emails a day! That’s all stored in the Outlook database and slows it down. Empty your spam folder and your trash folder often.

Rule 6. Compact your PST file every once in a while. You can do that by going to File, then Data Management. Next click on the PST file and choose Settings. Then click the Compact Now button.
